Not too long ago my wife and I visited a small village high in the Swiss Alps called Mürren. In this region there is plenty of hiking and activities for the outdoor enthusiast. If you like adventure in beautiful surroundings, you’ll love Mürren. We stayed in a quaint hostel run by a friendly English woman where we enjoyed a traditional Swiss breakfast of muesli, fruit juice and tea. Our host recommended pouring orange juice or grape juice over the muesli in place of milk, since she only had cows milk. A very good recommendation! It was exactly what a hungry hiker needed for a day exploring the mountains. I continue to enjoy this meal for breakfast nearly everyday. It’s simple to make, mostly raw, very satisfying and is packed with plenty of nutrients. It can be served hot or cold or mixed with other cereals. Below is one of our favorite recipes. Enjoy!
Recipe:
4 cups rolled oats or gluten free rolled oats
⅓ cup raisins
⅓ cup chopped dates
1 tablespoon goji berries
1 cup raw nuts, chopped (walnuts, almonds and/or pecans)
2 tablespoon raw sunflower seeds
2 tablespoon flax seed meal (ground flax seeds)
Optional: sesame seeds, cashews, cinnamon
Directions:
In a large bowl, combine the oats, raisins, dates, goji berries, nuts, sunflower seeds, flaxseed meal and other optional ingredients. Place in an airtight container and keep in a cool place or in the refrigerator.
Serve with non-dairy milk or fruit juice (we recommend grape, orange, or apple juice)
